Impulsa is one of the companies founded by
Manuel J. Clouthier Del Rincón more than 40 years ago. This
corporate group’s main business areas are agriculture, real
estate development, and media, primarily in the State of Sinaloa
in Northwest Mexico.
Mr. Clouthier attended high school in the United States at a military
school where he excelled as a student and as a football athlete.
Here he quickly learned discipline, teamwork, and the democratic
values of the United States’ society.

To attend college Mr. Clouthier returned
to the modern and industrial city of Monterrey, Mexico where he
enrolled in the Agricultural Engineering program of the “Instituto
Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey” (ITESM).
It is here where his entrepreneurial spirit was born.
Mr. Clouthier returned to Culiacán, Mexico in 1958 to start his business
career. He began vegetable and produce farming with his main production being
exported to the United States. His farm, “Agrícola Paralelo 38”,
stood out for its productivity, quality products, social responsibility, employee
benefits, and its environmental programs. The company was one of the first to
distribute company earnings to its employees, the firm also instituted a health
care system and built schools for its employees and families.
Parallel to his business activities, Mr. Clouthier was a community
business leader and was nominated to several leadership roles.
In the 1970’s he was the elected Leader of Farmers of Culiacán,
Sinaloa and he fought for the farmers’ land against the socialist
government of Luis Echeverría. In the 1980’s, Mr.
Clouthier was voted President of the largest business organization
in Mexico and he struggled against the authoritative measures of
the government of Jose Lopez Portillo when he expropriated the
Mexican banking system. Maquio, as his friends called him, considered
both of these actions to be attempts against freedom, these events
influenced him to make the decision to become more politically
involved and to strive for his Country and its democratization.

In 1986 he was candidate for Governor of the State of Sinaloa
representing the political party PAN and in 1988 he was the candidate
for President of Mexico representing the same political party
against Carlos Salinas de Gortari and Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas.
After the election and rumors of electoral fraud, Carlos Salinas
de Gortari was pronounced the winner. Officially Mr. Clouthier
obtained 17% of the vote or 3.3 million votes.
Today his son, Manuel
Jesús Clouthier Carrillo, continues
to strive for the same values of discipline and social responsibility
as his father, and has consolidated the firm based on these values.
